The definition nobody gives you
Most outdoor lighting answers the question of how to light a property. Accent lighting inverts that. It is selective by definition. Point it at a specimen tree, a stone column, a water feature, a front door and stop. The dark part is not a gap in the plan. It is the reason the lit thing stands out.That is really the whole idea, and it is not complicated. Choose a small number of things and light nothing else. Every plan drifts toward more, and the pressure comes from both directions.
What is worth accenting
Some things take light well and plenty do not. Texture is the best predictor: masonry, tree bark, timber, anything with relief in it. Flat painted siding mostly just gets brighter. Shape helps too: a tree with structure, an arch, a column, a gable peak.
The most common mistake
Plans go wrong when the list grows. One feature turns into six over a couple of conversations. Once everything is lit, nothing is emphasized, and the plan is just illumination. Restraint is the technique.The best accent plans tend to look almost underdone on paper and exactly right on the property at night, which is why they are hard to sell and easy to appreciate.
Where it sits among the other work
Accent lighting is usually one layer of several. Landscape lighting covers the beds, paths and trees more broadly. Security lighting deals with the places that need to be seen. Roofline work lights the architecture. Accent lighting is the layer that adds intent.
Dimmer than you think
Output is easy to get wrong upward. Your eyes adjust to darkness, so a modest amount of light on a dark property does a great deal. The goal is to draw attention, not to interrogate the shrubbery.
From below or down out of a tree
Accent light arrives from one of two directions, and the two look nothing alike. Uplighting throws shadows upward, which nothing in nature does, so it reads as dramatic and slightly theatrical. Light from above reads as ordinary, which is exactly why it works so well over seating and paths.
A maintenance note
Anything aimed at planting will be aimed slightly wrong eventually. A shrub uplit perfectly when it went in will grow past the beam. It is a small thing that makes a big visual difference. Re aiming every couple of seasons keeps the plan looking the way it was designed to.The test is unchanged: stand in the yard after dark.
