What tends to earn it
Some things take light well and some do not. Texture is the usual test: masonry, tree bark, timber, anything with relief in it. Smooth surfaces reflect light without doing anything with it. Shape helps too: a strong silhouette, a distinct form.

The failure mode is always the same: too many accents. The homeowner likes the first uplit tree and asks for a second, then a third, then the corners of the house, then the shrubs. At some point there is no dark left to contrast against, and nothing stands out anymore. Dimmer than you think
Output almost always ends up too high. After dark the threshold is low, and too much reads as a floodlight. You are creating a point of interest, not lighting a work area.

Accent light arrives from one of two directions, and the two look nothing alike. Light from below is inherently dramatic, which is why it suits a column, a trunk or a stone face and flatters very little else. Light from above feels natural, which is exactly why it works so well over seating and paths.

Landscape accents point at plants, and plants move. Growth closes over a fixture, and mulch, mowing and weather move ground mounted units. It is not a fault, it is just how it works.
